Living by the sea is great for solar panels in terms of sunshine, but the coast adds a few details to get right. These are the ones we see most on the Orihuela Costa.
Salt air and choosing materials
Salt accelerates corrosion. Aluminium structures, stainless screws and properly sealed connections prevent most problems, and periodic cleaning removes the salt film that can reduce output.
Shade: pergolas, palm trees and neighbouring buildings
A palm frond or a neighbour's wall can cut production in the afternoon. We check shade through the day and across the seasons before proposing a layout.
Which orientation is best here
South produces the most, but east and west roofs work well too, losing roughly 10% to 20%. An east and west split can even smooth production through the day.
Flat terrace or pitched roof
Flat roofs allow ballasted frames set at an ideal angle, while pitched tiled roofs follow the slope. Wind loads matter on the coast and are part of the design.
When to check your installation
An annual visit is sensible near the sea, and also after storms. Look for loose fixings, corrosion marks and any drop in production.
